With the launch of the Reflections feature, students may respond in various ways to what they see. Since some of your students might find that they had multiple negative check-ins and more negative than positive ones, consider the best way to support them as they review their Reflections. Students with 50%+ check-ins in the ‘I need some help’ and ‘I’m feeling negative’ categories will be presented with support options within their Reflections. If needed, arrange for a staff member to speak with them and review any interventions you may have provided the student over the past term and ones you might want to introduce them to moving forward.
When discussing Reflections with students, consider discussing the following points:
- All emotions are valid, and it’s natural to experience a full range of feelings.
- Some students might find that they had more negative than positive check-ins, especially for the card that shows their feelings. If this is the case, you can reinforce with students that it is normal to experience a range of emotions, especially when looking at an entire term or year’s worth of check-ins!
- Encourage them also to pay special attention to the card that shows what actions helped them feel better.
- Younger students may not have the same conceptualisation of the passage of time. If they notice many negative check-ins, they may experience that negativity now and not understand that this is their historical data.
- Remind them that Reflections show information over the term or year and point out the more positive check-ins.
- Emphasise the ‘Self Reflections’ and ‘Gratitude reflection’ cards as a reminder of the positive things that students may have experienced, and highlight that there are always practical steps they can take to manage their low moods.
- Let students know that if anything comes up while reviewing their Reflections, they can always seek support through Pulse or directly with a trusted staff member.
